Vampirella

A few days ago I became inspired by Dynamite Entertainment’s new Vampirella series and started to sketch up some pin-up ideas.

The Heap Is Coming

Announced in Moonstone Books’ March 2011 solicits:

THE HEAP #1
Story: Charles Knauf
Art: Sami Kivela
Colors: Renato Guerra
Cover: Mark Maddox
32pgs, color, $3.99

Europe, 1940: The twilight of magic and the first steps of modern science as we know it. Hitler’s Nazi party sweeps across Europe as the last creatures of myth and magic feed off of mortal suffering. It is time for Midgard’s last defender to arise. What is it? Why is it doing this? When will it come for me? These are questions that the wicked will ask themselves. Questions that only can be answered by THE HEAP!

By the way, I’ve designed the monstrous logo as well.

Farewell To The Phantom

The Finnish Egmont stopped publishing the Phantom, one of my childhood favorites. I guess a picture is worth a thousand words..

Zeroids - The Return

Zeroids #2, which I have illustrated fifty-fifty with Roberto Castro, is finally out! For a reason or another I’m not on the artist list on the web pages (damn!) but take a close look at the cover at www.midtowncomics.com. There I am!

10.10.10

The autumn so far has been busy for many (positive) reasons. Marrying the love of my life after ten years on 10.10.10 was one of them :)

Spidey

Started doing a Spider-Man sample a while ago but had no time to finish it. Maybe someday.

Zeroids in Color

Aaron Shaps talks about the Zeroids at www.firstcomicsnews.com. The interview includes two of my pages. Actually this is the first time I’ve seen them in color.

Outcast

Here's a sneak peek at a project that Dino Caruso and I have been working on.

The colors by Paul John Little and the lettering by Ed Brisson.

Hopefully there will be more to tell soon!

Eiffel, Louvre, Notre Dame… and Frank Cho

We spent last week in Paris and had a lot of fun!

In the middle of the sightseeing I also enjoyed the comic book stores of the city. I found, for example, Wizard’s Jim Lee Millennium Edition, which I’ve been hunting for for a long time.

On Thursday we attended the grand opening of Frank Cho’s art exhibition.

I was very excited about the art (that’s me checking the details on the background).

Next day Frank was sketching and autographing in a local comic book store. A real once in a lifetime opportunity!

Guess which one is mine and which one Karoliina’s :)

Warsaw Rising

Last year Warsaw Rising Museum (Poland) organized the third graphic story competition on the events of the Warsaw Rising during World War II. I took part and got my story in the collection entitled "Rising ’44 in graphic story" which was published this spring by the museum and Egmont Polska.

The Return of The Heap

I'm currently illustrating The Heap for Moonstone Books. The muck-monster story is written by Charles Knauf (Iron Man, Eternals).

Redesign by Charles and me, pencils and inks by me.

Hellgirl - The Pick of the Month

Just happened to notice that my old Hellgirl pin-up was "The Pick of the Month" in the original art store of The Finnish Comics Society.

Chimera

Hollow Victory, an awesome horror story written by Dino Caruso and illustrated by me, appeared in 2012 Final Prayer Anthology last autumn. This way I also got to know Arno Hurter, a writer from South Africa. He had a couple of stories accepted into Omega Chapters Anthology of Catatomic Comics and I had the pleasure of illustrating one of them, Chimera. Here's a sneak peek at it.

The Shot Heard 'Round The Worlds

I've been working on a couple of projects with a talented Canadian writer, Dino Caruso, since spring 2009. One of our projects, The Shot Heard 'Round The Worlds, was published a while ago in Ape Entertainment's UFO Anthology. The story was colored by Jessie Lam and Ed Brisson took care of the lettering.

The pages (without word balloons) are on display on my online portfolio but check www.apecmx.com to read the brilliant texts, as well.

I’m always interested in the process of creating a comic page. So here’s the page #2 from pencils to colors for “process junkies” like me!
